Port and Dock workers to go on nationwide strike from July 16

Functioning of all major ports is likely to be affected from July 16 2008 with the Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu, declining to accept demands of port workers in a meeting in New Delhi today.

The Port and Dock Workers Federation has called for a nationwide indefinite strike from July 16 in support of their wage demands as per the Bipartite Wage Settlement Committee recommendations. Major ports are those ports that are under the Central jurisdiction.

The five recognised federations of port and dock workers who recently met at Mumbai under the umbrella of All India Port and Dock Workers Federation (AIPDWF) had decided to serve the strike notice to all port authorities in the country in support of their demands.

In view of the above strike it is likely shipment movement may get hampered and the resultant will be port demurrage at all terminals.
