HOW TO PREPARE YOUR FINE ART COLLECTION FOR INTERNATIONAL RELOCATION

Introduction

Did you know the global art market will be valued at over $67 billion in 2024, with pieces ranging from ancient antiquities to contemporary masterpieces? When moving fine art to new places, especially internationally, safeguarding its safety and quality remains among the most important. Whether you're an art collector, gallery owner, or artist preparing to relocate refined art ensembles, understanding the intricacies of packing, moving, and ensuring your collection is critical. Moving delicate artworks is not just about bubble wrapping; this requires specialized expertise, appropriate packing materials, and partnership with qualified companies that move fragile fine arts.
At PM Relocations (PMR), we understand the importance of preserving your fine art's integrity throughout the relocation process. As experts in international packing services, we ensure that your art arrives at its destination in perfect condition, no matter how far it travels. Here's a step-by-step guide to preparing your fine art collection for international relocation.

Start with a Detailed Inventory

Before packing fine art for moving, make notes about your collection and make a detailed report before packing up fine pieces for moving. Make a note of every single individual, including size, medium, and current condition. Take several pictures from various angles. Such an organization proves helpful not just for orderliness but also for art insurance for moving. You will have tangible proof in case of damage to the artwork during transfer.
Collaborate with an international moving company specializing in fine art transportation services. PMR, with vast experience in relocating art collections and moving art studios, can help you through the full procedure, ensuring that every detail is paid attention to.

Choose the Right Packing Materials

Not all packing materials are created equal, especially when it comes to fine art. Your art may be fragile, delicate, and highly valuable, so choosing the right packing supplies is crucial for protecting your investment. Whether you're moving fragile art or preparing to transport large pieces, the following materials are essential:-

Acid-free tissue papers shall be used on paintings to protect them from any damage during transportation by smudges or discolorations.
High-quality bubble wrap for padding and protecting sculptures and frames.
Custom-made crate for more significant or oddly shaped works of art.
Corner protectors together with foam boards for framed pictures

PMR delivers professional art packing/crating services in the world of fine art that address the needs of every piece in your collection. We collaborate with you to create personalized crates that ensure the utmost safety during international shipping.

Consider the Mode of Transport

When transporting fine art internationally, choosing the right mode of transport is vital. Art can be moved via air, sea, or land, but the mode of transport varies based on various factors, such as the delicacy of the art pieces, shipment time frame, or destination.

Air Transport: Air transportation is often the best option for moving art across the country or internationally when time is a constraint. It is faster and more manageable when it comes to controlling environmental conditions. PMR has specific air freight forwarding services tailored towards delicate fine artworks.
Sea Transport: For more extensive art collections or galleries looking for more profitable solutions, sea freight may be an option. It’s slower but ideal for bulkier pieces and art gallery relocation projects.

Regardless of the mode of transport, proper handling and secure packaging are non-negotiable. PMR has both air and sea freight services that will make sure your items reach their destination safely, be it London, New York or Tokyo.

Ensure the Appropriate Insurance

At the time of relocating art pieces from one country to any other country worldwide, a comprehensive indemnity plan is essential. Art insurance for moving protects your collection from unforeseen circumstances such as damage or loss during transit. Moreover, be sure to check what type of insurance plan your international mover provides and look for additional options regarding valuable items.
For fine art movements, PMR is an insurer specialized in customized insurances that protect each piece represented in your art gallery. We will steer you along this path and make sure you have the right coverage in place, so that you can have a peaceful mind during relocation.

Consider Special Storage Needs

Not all art is ready to move immediately. In some instances, whenever you are shifting your artworks you might have to store them for a while before and even after the moving. As for fine arts, special climate control and security are required when storing them.
At PMR we provide fine arts storage services that guarantee your works are kept under a controlled environment either temporarily or on a long-term basis’. Our storage facilities are designed to protect your collection from temperature fluctuations, humidity, and other environmental factors that could compromise the integrity of your artwork.

Pay Attention to Customs and Documentation

Moving fine art internationally comes with its own set of regulations and paperwork. Every country has different customs requirements for importing and exporting fine art, and it's crucial to have all the necessary documentation ready to avoid delays or additional costs.

Customs formalities: Ensure you have the proper documentation for your artworks, such as certificates of authenticity, invoices, and detailed descriptions.

CITES permits: If your artwork includes materials like ivory or certain types of wood, you may need a CITES permit to ensure it complies with international wildlife trade regulations.

As part of our door-to-door service, PMR assists in the import and export customs formalities. All paperwork is handled by us so that there are no problems with customs clearance for your artwork whether you are relocating to Paris, Dubai, or any other worldwide center.

Partner with a Reliable Art Moving Company

Finding a reliable fine art moving company is key to ensuring a smooth relocation process. Look out for a company that has built its reputation through the provision of fine art moving services exclusively and it has been successful. PMR is more than just packers and movers; we specialize in transporting fine artworks. Our specialists are trained to handle, package and transport delicate works of art with accuracy and caution.

Plan for Installation at Your New Location

Once your art has arrived at its destination, the subsequent obstacle is setting it up in its new home. It doesn’t matter if you are relocating an art studio, or you simply moved to a different gallery; planning for installation should be done carefully.
PMR offers a complete service package from transporting to erecting and disassembling pieces of art in your new site. Our group makes sure that each item is unpacked safely and exhibits properly according to what you want, thus, enabling you to fit comfortably into your new environment.
